Zantac Lawsuit

Zantac lawsuits involve claims that Zantac (ranitidine) contains a cancerous contaminant known as Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). Zantac is a popular anti-acid drug used to treat heartburn and acid reflux.

Our law firm is currently assisting clients who took Zantac and suffered particular kinds of digestive track cancers. This includes esophageal cancer, stomach cancer, pancreatic cancer, bladder cancer and liver cancer.

On April 1, 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced it was requesting manufacturers to immediately withdraw all prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) ranitidine products from the market place. The FDA determined that the impurity in some ranitidine products increases overtime when stored in higher than room temperatures which causes unacceptable levels of NDMA. Additional studies have shown that exposure to higher than normal levels of NDMA could lead to cancer.

NDMA is a cancer-causing human carcinogen. It is dangerous and high levels should be avoided. In 2019, the FDA became aware of NDMA in ranitidine and in September of 2019 they started to warn the public of the potential risks.

This has caused a stream of lawsuits against the manufacturers, Sanofi and Boerhringer Ingelheim which allege that the manufacturers were responsible for placing a product on the market that was contaminated with a known carcinogenic agent.

The most probable first Zantac lawsuit was initiated in California in 2019 against Sanofi and Boerhringer Ingelheim. The allegations involve that the makers of Zantac were aware (or could reasonably be expected to be aware) of the risk that their products could pose to users and they failed to disclose this known risk to consumers and the government.

Thereafter, several lawsuits were filed against Sanofi and Boerhringer Ingelheim around the country. The judicial panel of multidistrict litigation (JPML) has since consolidated all litigation against the makers of Zantac in federal court in the Southern District of Florida. The proceedings are taking place in front of Judge Robin L. Rosenberg under multidistrict litigation (MDL) 2924.
